At York Foot Orthotics and Bracing, we handcraft orthotics in our in-house lab, but we also offer custom knee braces where we create the cast and send it to a lab for fabrication. Custom knee braces are orthopedic braces used to alleviate knee pain. They offload osteoarthritis, sports injuries, and pain from meniscus tears. Patients in Collingwood, Ontario, with ligament tears and strains may also benefit from these custom knee braces. Fabricated from a cast of the patient’s knee, the cast is then sent away to a lab where a custom brace is made based on concerns of the patient.
Most insurance plans cover the cost of custom-casted foot orthotics and custom knee braces, as well as the complete biomechanical assessment. A prescription and biomechanical assessment are required for orthopedic knee braces.
There is also the option for non-custom knee braces, in some situations. A non-custom knee brace is a corrective device based on a simple sizing method (small, medium, large, extra-large). These types of devices usually take the form of sleeves which are pulled up to wrap around the knee. Some braces may have side metal bars to help support the sleeve. A cast is not taken. The materials are selected based on assessment, patient history and patient concerns. Non-custom foot orthotics and non-custom knee braces are not covered by insurance plans.

We also offer ankle bracing, which is a good option for weak ankles and injuries. Ankle bracing is used to treat sprains to the ankle joint, helping to stabilize the joint and reduce pain. By immobilizing the ankle, the soft tissue is allowed to heal. Ankle braces come in a variety of sizes and styles to treat a variety of concerns. Most ankle braces will fit comfortably into lace-up or Velcro footwear.

Those who wear a knee brace to recover from serious injury usually wear them for a year, while those who have specific chronic conditions may require long-term or permanent use of knee braces.
How do I know whether I’m a good candidate for a knee brace?
Custom knee braces are useful for people who have a chronic condition like osteoporosis, have recently torn their ACL, or have just had surgery on their knee. To know for sure whether a knee brace is a suitable solution, you will need to consult a physician. They will provide the prescription and then you’ll need our orthotist to create the custom knee brace.
When should I consider a non-custom knee brace over a custom-made one?
Custom-made knee braces are used for more severe conditions and injuries, while non-custom knee braces may be a good solution for those who experience mild to moderate knee pain, swelling, or instability from minor ligament strains or minor injuries.
