Knee braces can provide relief from several different conditions.
At York Foot Orthotics and Bracing, we know that comfortable movement starts with the right support. Along with crafting foot orthotics in our in-house lab, we provide custom knee braces designed to address each patient’s specific needs.
Custom bracing can help relieve discomfort associated with osteoarthritis, meniscus tears, sports injuries, and ligament strains or tears. For patients in Collingwood, Ontario, the process begins with an assessment and a cast of the knee. We take time to understand how symptoms affect walking, work, recreation, and other daily activities. From there, we send the cast to a specialized lab, where the brace is fabricated to suit the patient’s concerns and measurements.
A prescription and biomechanical assessment are required for custom orthopaedic knee braces. Many insurance plans cover custom-casted foot orthotics, custom bracing, and the associated assessment, although coverage depends on the individual policy.
We also offer non-custom knee braces when a ready-made option is appropriate. These supports come in standard sizes rather than being produced from a cast. They often resemble sleeves that slide over the knee, sometimes with metal supports along the sides. We recommend suitable materials and designs based on your history, assessment results, and comfort needs. It is important to note that non-custom bracing and foot orthotics are generally not covered by insurance.
CTi knee braces are custom-made for each individual to provide total knee ligament support. With Sensil padding for improved suspension and a rigid, non-corrosive carbon frame, these braces can even be used while playing water sports! CTi braces are available in 3 different customizable models and come with a lifetime warranty.
Finally, we offer ankle braces that can help stabilize weak or injured ankles, ease discomfort from sprains, and limit movement while soft tissues recover. Available in different styles and sizes, many fit comfortably inside lace-up or hook-and-loop footwear.

HIDDEN
Are custom knee braces a permanent solution?
For injuries, knee braces are meant to be worn temporarily. They strengthen the knee and surrounding muscles, providing support and stability so that, eventually, the braces are no longer needed. Those who wear a knee brace to recover from serious injury usually wear them for a year, while those who have specific chronic conditions may require long-term or permanent use of knee braces.
How do I know whether I’m a good candidate for a knee brace?
Custom knee braces are useful for people who have a chronic condition like osteoporosis, have recently torn their ACL, or have just had surgery on their knee. To know for sure whether a knee brace is a suitable solution, you will need to consult a physician. They will provide the prescription and then you’ll need our orthotist to create the custom knee brace.
When should I consider a non-custom knee brace over a custom-made one?
Custom-made knee braces are used for more severe conditions and injuries, while non-custom knee braces may be a good solution for those who experience mild to moderate knee pain, swelling, or instability from minor ligament strains or minor injuries. Discuss your options with your physician so you can consider each factor involved and make the right choice for you.
