We will get to the cause of your knee pain and provide a custom solution to ease your pain and improve your mobility.

Pain in the knee may be caused by long periods of standing or repetitive movement. The tibia is rotating on the inside while the femur is being pulled in an external rotation to compensate. These opposing forces happen at the same time that the lateral knee is being compressed. At York Foot Orthotics and Bracing, we offer custom orthotics made in-house to be a long-term solution for your knee pain.

Knee Pain in Wasaga Beach, Ontario

There are many things that can cause knee pain, including:

  • The hip and femur bone may lean outward and the muscle pull in the direction of external rotation which shifts the body weight laterally to make up for poor medial stability.
  • When weak ankles roll inward, the ankle joints compress on the lateral side. This can present a flattening of the arch as well.
  • When the lateral knee joint compresses, the associated ligaments and muscles are compromised as they try to stabilize the medial knee.
  • Inflammation due to osteoarthritis
  • Small or large tears of the tendon above or below the patella (kneecap)
  • Sports injury, typically to the patellar tendon
  • Patella fracture
  • Ligament issues to the ACL, PCL, MCL
  • Cartilage injuries

Knee pain can be exhibited around or under the patella or with tenderness in the ligaments and muscles of the knee. Some causes, such as a patella fracture, may require surgery. Others can be helped with custom orthotics or braces. In general, custom orthotics include:

  • Medial longitudinal arch support to control pronation
  • A heel cup with rear foot posting to control the hindfoot motion
  • Forefoot wedging as needed

FAQs About Knee Pain

If you are dealing with knee pain, our custom orthotics may be able to help. Learn more about knee pain and potential solutions by checking out our frequently asked questions below.

HIDDEN
What are the chances that my knee pain is a result of osteoporosis?

If your knee pain is caused by arthritis, chances are high. Around 95% of knee pain caused by arthritis is caused specifically by osteoporosis, a condition that weakens bones and causes them to become brittle. Weak and brittle bones are more prone to fractures.

What injuries can cause knee pain?

The most common injuries that cause knee pain are twisting injuries. ACL tears, meniscus tears, and ligament injuries are often the culprits of knee pain caused by injuries. A knee brace may help to provide support, strengthen the knee and muscles around it, and alleviate pain during recovery, which is where we come in. If you need a custom knee brace, you’ll need an orthotist to create the cast before the brace is fabricated.

Are knee braces worn permanently?

Knee braces aren’t worn permanently if the knee pain is caused by an injury. Some people with specific chronic conditions like osteoporosis may require long-term use of a custom knee brace, although these braces are worn only when they are needed for activity and pain relief, not when sleeping.

How are custom knee braces made?

We create a cast of the patient’s knee and then send it to a lab for fabrication of their knee brace, which is made based on the patient’s concerns.
